The chapter in the US version titled THE HIPPIE starts with the LSD trip, so I'd have to say the part removed was this:
Untitled #3 (The Hippie, On the Santiago River, Ecuador, 1969)
a - Selena and Sparky going on a trip
b - Flashback to plane ride to volcano erupting
c - Crash then Garcia fixes and leaves
d - Boat trip through Jungle
e - Camping in descriptive forest

Although, part d, and e may appear after the mention of LSD.

That chapter starts out with:

"Wanta do some acid?"
"Huh?"
"LSD. Wanta do some?"

The difference between the British and North American editions (apart from shuffling the first three chapters into Part 2 of the novel) is the plane trip to the volcano that lands Sparky in the jungle.

It's in the W.H. Allen edition, but not Morrow/NAL. When Britain's Hodder & Stoughton reissued HEADHUNTER in 1993, they used the American type set.

So the only rogue edition is the Allen 1st in Britain.

For Mbwun:

Let me say first that you have NO IDEA how it PAINS me to open this and put it flat in the scanner.
I consider myself privileged to own this ...
It is the second time I have opened it, first was when I received it many moons ago. And if Mr Slade would do me the honour of a signature (perhaps a nice doodle of my tattoo ...) I shall open it once more in Victoria, a year from now ...

Thank you very much i.am.sladist, you'll probably never know how much I appreciate being able to read that, after all the years I've wanted to. I just hope that putting your book in the scanner didn't affect it.

Sorry to have put you through so much trouble.

I now have an idea what it was that Steely was talking about.

And I have to say Slade, I don't quite understand why the changes were made to this section of the novel for the North American, and all subsequent publishings of the book.

If there's anyone who has read the WH Allen version, that has not read the other version, the passage that was deleted starts with:

It was strictly by chance that they had met in the jungles of Equador.

And ends with:

They were too deep in the jungle.
And too far away.

There seems to be some slight re-ordering of what was left too.

Mbwun, you are most very welcome. If I recall you led me here to the forum from Facebook. YOU probably will never know how much I appreciate that ... truly.
It really was no trouble. I'm sorry to have not known Steely, sounds like a great man, a great Sladist.

I look forward to meeting you in Victoria! And all the Sladists for that matter.

i.am.sladist,

Good. That question has been around for years, and keeps coming back. Now everyone can read it.

Mbwun,

The original three chapter setup is along the lines of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. Bond doesn't come into the story until the plot against him is set out in full.

Slade's American editor felt readers would be itching to get into the modern story, and that shuffling the early chapters in would heighten suspense.

He had been in the business for almost forty years, and had paid six figures U.S. - real money - for a Canadian first novel. An editor is your friend, not your enemy, and his opinion was backed by logic and experience. What if I hadn't followed it, and HEADHUNTER had tanked? There'd have been no GHOUL and the rest of the books, and you would not be here!

There is nothing worse than a prima donna author...a guy who thinks his words come straight from God.

I just received a copy of the W.H. Allen book that I found via the Advanced Book Exchange. It's in excellent condition, with only minor tanning of the pages due to age. No marks, no tears, no nothing. Just awesome condition.

My cost? $4, plus $5.xx for Priority Mail shipping. :D
