Well ... it would seem that in the process of rewriting the two-film ALIEN prequel Ridley Scott was primed to direct, the film has morphed into something that, although influenced by the ALIEN mythos, has nothing to do with the franchise. I wonder if Scott will kickstart a whole new franchise with his PROMETHEUS?

You know, this doesn't exactly surprise me - as a matter of fact, I'd actually suspected that something along these lines was probably going to happen, considering all that was going on with the prequel.
It's sort of like when, after he'd spent months and months working on a film called TRIPOLI - even going so far as to scouting filming sites, and having models made of the sets he was going to use - all of a sudden deciding he wanted to make a Crusades film, and turning around and making KINGDOM OF HEAVEN instead.
And, apparently Ridley Scott is also working on a film adaptation of Justin Cronin's book, THE PASSAGE, although it's not listed on his IMDb webpage yet.
