My mother planted one of these in the front yard earlier this year:

This morning the flower opened up. It's kind of a little sister to this plant:

Mbwun - is this the same plant that only blooms once a year? I noticed in the article that it is also known as the coffin plant because of it's rotten smell. I guess this might work as a deterent in some gardens . . . :lollol:

Judy,

It grows from a bulb - a fairly sizable bulb. So, like pretty much every other bulb plant, it does only produce one flower, or more accurately, inflorescence, a year.

It is apparently poisonous, so animals tend to keep away from it.

It figures that the day it opens up, we get a deluge of rain that lasted pretty much the entire day, and most of the night. The edges of the petal have been pretty beaten up by the rainfall now.

The spadix on this one is around 15 inches long, and the inflorescence that surrounds it is around 22 inches long.

Haven't noticed much in the way of a smell from it today, but yesterday you could smell quite an unpleasant aroma for up to 30 feet when you stood downwind from it.

Sure is an intriguing thing though.

It definitely attracts the flies to it. Hopefully, they will have been successful in pollinating it. It sounds as if the bulb may multiply as well.

When an Amorphophallus Titanium blooms, it usually makes the news, as they only bloom every so often.

One bloomed in Eastern Canada a few months back, and it made the news not only for blooming, but for being the first time one had ever bloomed in Canada.

There have been many that have bloomed in the US, and the UK, over the years.

Remember that fire in my hometown back in 2009? Well, I came across a local resident's blog and she is a photographer with lots of picture of the fire posted there.
